The Kids Program

Our kids program is designed in a way to keep them engaged and having fun while learning to defend themselves. Brazilian Jiujitsu serves as a great outlet for energy while also building self-confidence. With our team of coaches and professors we have decades of experience working with children.

The number one emphasis here at Oldschool is on safety. Every child is monitored by our team of coaches. While martial arts are important, we want every child to walk away excited to come back the next day.

Coach Joab

Coach Joab began wrestling in High School in 2003. Later on in 2013, he began training no-gi BJJ in San Diego, California. From the South Pacific to the mats, Coach Joab leverages his extensive teaching and professional military experience to create a safe and effective learning environment. His accomplishments include: 7 deployments, training in instruction for emergency and disaster scenarios, a BS in Public Health, and he is currently serving as an Active Duty Senior Chief in the United States Navy. More recently, Joab has been training under Professor Bill since 2019.

Coach Ezra

Coach Ezra began training under Professor Bill at 43 years old, in January 2021. Since then, he has made excellent progress and now holds the rank of blue belt. Coach Ezra is a follower of Christ, veteran of the 82nd Airborne, and father of 3 girls who also do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He has a passion for Jiu-Jitsu and wants to give back by passing on what he has learned to the next generation.

Coach Mike

From the seas to the mats, coach Mike has been practicing BJJ for 15 months. He has 19 years of service and leadership experience in the Navy. Coach Mike has a passion for doing BJJ and loves helping with the kids program because it helps him connect with his family outside of the Navy, as well as coach and mentor other youths in our community.

Coach Elizabeth

Elizabeth has collectively worked in early childhood education and mentoring youth for over a decade. She is passionate about sharing her love of BJJ with the next generation, including her son Jonathan. She hopes to inspire other women to train BJJ and to encourage the young ladies to stick with it. Her journey on the mats started at the age of 18 when she took an MMA self-defense course. While she took many years off, her love for the grappling arts never died. She picked up BJJ in 2021 while her family was living in TN. Outside of training she enjoys spending time with her family, singing at her church and reading books.

Coach David

Coach David Champagne has over 20 years of teaching experience in the music world. He began training in Jiu Jitsu along with his son Arith in January of 2022 and immediately was hooked! Coach David serves as Associate Pastor at Sunrise Community Church in Atlantic Beach and he is the Adjunct Professor of Jazz Trumpet at Jacksonville University. He has been working with children and youth since 2002. He is trained in counseling and conflict resolution and is excited to be a part of the Old School Brazilian Jiu Jitsu family. David lives on the Southside with his wife of 20 years, Jody, and their 4 children, Emma, Molly, Arith, and Anne.
